In a recent announcement by Langston Wertz Jr. of the Charlotte Observer, Hough High School in North Carolina has appointed its new head coach for the boys basketball team, and it’s a name well-known throughout the Tar Heel State.
Beau Maye, who is also the brother of former North Carolina standout Luke, as well as the sibling of current New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, is stepping into this key role.
Having played his high school basketball at Hough, Maye averaged close to 13.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game during his senior year under coach Jason Grube, later earning a walk-on spot at the University of North Carolina.
In his junior season, Maye achieved personal best averages of 16.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, although his season was cut short due to a knee injury that confined him to only four games.
Maye takes the reins from former head coach Dan Larkin, who concluded a two-year tenure with a record of 20-31 and was unable to qualify for the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) state playoffs during his time at Hough.
The Huskies wrapped up the 2024-25 season by finishing with a 13-13 record and made it to the first round of the Class 4A state basketball tournament, where they faced the McDowell Titans and were eliminated by a score of 64-59.
Before Larkin’s arrival ahead of the 2023-2024 season, Jason Garube was the head coach at Hough for nine seasons from 2014 to 2023.
Beau Maye will officially begin his coaching role at Hough this fall after completing his master’s degree in North Carolina. Meanwhile, Hough High’s athletic director, Lori DeMarcus, believes that Maye is ideally suited for this position.
